In Botticelli’s masterpiece ‘The Birth Of Venus’, the goddess of love is portrayed standing on a large scallop shell. It’s one of the many reasons this ancient motif is symbolic of fertility and femininity. Shells, generally, hold a unique fascination for many people. A mystery. An other-worldliness. As the type of people who collect and obsess over beautiful shells, this design was lovingly created to encapsulate thousands of years of captivation. An important symbol to Native American tribes, feathers have different meanings depending on the culture. They can signal trust, honour, strength, power and, for us most especially, freedom.
